Demand Schools Serve Cruelty-Free Pork

Target: Mississippi Department of Education

Goal: End contract with cruel pork suppliers and pledge to serve only cruelty-free pork in schools

A whistleblower recently caught footage of several workers beating pigs and causing severe, unnecessary suffering inside Southern Quality Meats Slaughterhouse. This slaughterhouse is in contract with the Mississippi School District for $6 million to provide pork to school children. Please tell the State Interim Superintendent of The Mississippi Department of Education Dr. Lynn J. House to end the contract with this inhumane supplier and pledge to provide only cruelty-free pork to children.

Southern Quality Meats is a slaughterhouse located in Pontotoc, Mississippi. Recent undercover footage of workers at this plant revealed horrid animal abuse. Employees were videotaped beating downed pigs in the face, shocking pigs in their abdomens for no apparent reason, and causing severe, unnecessary injuries to pigs. The pigs that arrive at this death house have already suffered a lifetime of pain and abuse. Forced to pump out babies in order to continue the constant over-supply of pork, these sows are constantly pregnant, crammed into crates too small for them to move around, and suffer the agony of having their babies ripped from them prematurely to be slaughtered just as they themselves will soon be.  The undercover footage at Southern Quality Meats shows the extreme suffering and unnecessary misery brought upon these playful, innocent creatures.

The Mississippi School District is currently in a $6 million contract with Southern Quality Meats to supply pork to school children. Please tell the Interim State Superintendent of Education Dr. Lynn J. House to end the contract with this cruel, shameful pork supplier and pledge to only serve cruelty-free pork in Mississippi Schools.

Dear Dr. Lynn J. House,

I was horrified to learn of the ghastly suffering that occurs at the slaughterhouse that currently supplies Mississippi schools with pork. As the Mississippi Department of Education Interim State Superintendent, I am urging you to end the current $6 million contract that allows and financially supports the appalling suffering of these innocent creatures at this slaughterhouse. Please instead pledge to only serve cruelty-free pork in Mississippi schools.

Pigs who become pork suffer their entire lives in pain and agony, kept in filthy, cramped cages too small to turn around and forced into constant pregnancy, only to suffer constant abuse at the hands of their keepers and a subsequent horrific, terrifying death. A whistleblower recently caught undercover footage of the extreme abuse the pigs suffer at Southern Quality Meats; the very supplier who provides pork for schools in Mississippi.

I am urging you to cut off the monetary support that fuels this disgusting, heinous slaughterhouse. Please discontinue the contract with Southern Quality Meats and instead pledge to only provide cruelty-free pork to children in Mississippi schools.

I am horrified at how pigs are treated, throughout their short and miserable lives. This most recent description of their treatment by your “Quality” foods company is sickening. I have not bought nor consumed any pork products for several years because I was aware of the suffering of the poor animals, but this is even worse than I thought! Who the hell are you, DOCTOR Lynn J House, and how can you condone this kind of trearment of sentient creatures?! I hope there’s a “Pig Goddess” in Heaven who will give you a taste of your own medecine!!

Why is it a necessity to serve pork at all?
