Target: Jerry Brown, Governor of California
Goal: Better the educational system for transgender students
Recently the School Success and Opportunities act, a bill that would protect transgender students from discrimination that excludes them from classes and activities, has made it to the desk of California Governor Jerry Brown. Urge Governor Brown to sign the bill in support of Transgender people everywhere.
This bill is crucial in the ongoing fight to end discrimination against transgender students in California, and possibly in other states as well. It could lead to the creation of similar bills in other states if passed. While there is already a current law that criminalizes discrimination against transgender persons in California, this bill will further help transgender students by clarifying the preexisting law and informing schools of their responsibilities to their students. This will help to ensure the success and protection of their transgender students.
Every year there are dozens of students who meet challenges in their school lives due to being transgender. Things like not being able to get dressed for PE because teachers don’t acknowledge their chosen pronoun can halt a student from participating in class, this can make it harder for them to earn credits and graduate.
By signing this petition you are urging Governor Jerry Brown to sign this bill and further protect transgender rights. Nothing, gender nor pronoun, should stop someone from receiving an education.
Dear Governor Brown,
I am urging you to pass the School Success and Opportunities Act (AB1266) in support of bettering the protection of transgender persons. All citizens deserve to receive an education regardless of their gender or pronoun and should not be met with challenges when trying to do so.
Bettering the educational system for transgender students to help them graduate is an extremely important matter. The School Success and Opportunities Act would do that by clarifying the preexisting anti-discrimination law and by informing schools of their responsibilities to their students. It would prohibit any school official from treating transgender students differently from any other student. This would be a great step for transgender students.
There are already similar programs throughout the state, in cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, that have proven successful in protecting and combating discrimination against transgender students. I am urging you to sign the Assembly Bill 1266 to further protect transgender students.
