Goal: Allow transgendered student to use the restroom of her choice
Recently, Alex Wilson, a transgendered nursing student in Clearwater, Florida, was forbidden from using the women’s restroom on campus. Alex was born male but is currently in the process of transitioning to be female. She was singled out because she is transgendered and humiliated by being forced to use a private, unisex bathroom in a different building. By doing this, the school has shown great insensitivity to Alex’s situation. She should not be forced to use a far away bathroom simply because she is transgendered.
Alex had been using the women’s restroom since she began attending the school. However, a fellow student complained about her presence in the restroom. In response, school officials pulled Alex from her classes and told her she would no longer be allowed to use the women’s restroom. Instead of using any restroom in the classroom building, Alex is now forced to use a unisex bathroom in the administration building, which she complains is treated like a supply cabinet. She was also told that if she did use the women’s restroom again, ‘I would have charges pressed against me. And that because of that I would be removed from the program as a nurse.’
The school’s treatment of this situation was extremely insensitive. Alex identifies as female, and she should be allowed to use the women’s restroom. One student’s complaint should not have resulted in the humiliation, far away facilities, and threat of pressed charges that Alex received. She deserves an apology for this treatment, and the school must let her use the bathroom of her choice.
Dear Pintellas Technical Education Center:
Recently, you told a transgendered student that she was not allowed to use the women’s restroom. Alex Wilson identifies as female, and chooses to use the restroom for her gender. However, based on the complaint of one student, you forced Alex to use a unisex restroom in a separate building, and threatened to press charges against her. She had done nothing to warrant this extremely insensitive behavior.
I ask you to apologize to Alex and allow her to use the bathroom of her choice. There is no reason for her to be forced to use a small bathroom in another building, and it is extremely insensitive and immoral to threaten to press charges against her. Alex’s being transgendered does not warrant this behavior. Apologize to her and let her use the bathroom for the gender she identifies with.
