Condemn Wisconsin for Restricting Abortions

Target: Governor Scott Walker

Goal: Condemn Governor Walker of Wisconsin for restricting the right to have an abortion

Abortion is one of the most heated issues in this country. More and more states with conservative governors are passing bills that restrict the right to have an abortion. Texas and North Carolina are currently struggling with abortion restriction bills that have potential to pass. In Wisconsin, GOP Governor Scott Walker passed a bill that largely restricts the freedom to have an abortion. The bill was passed by the Republican controlled state legislature.

Governor Walker, the governor who was recalled in Wisconsin but maintained his position as governor, recently passed a bill that makes it difficult for a woman to have an abortion. He is a far right Republican, and that is shown through many pieces of legislation he has passed. The new bill requires a woman to have an ultrasound to view the fetus before having an abortion. It is already emotionally difficult for a woman to choose to have an abortion, and seeing the actual fetus through an ultrasound makes it even more difficult. The bill will go into effect very soon.

Planned Parenthood and Affiliated Medical Service, which both have abortion clinics in the state, have filed suit against the bill in federal court along with the American Civil Liberties Union. Research says that the bill will cut the amount of abortion clinics in the state in half because of lack of funding. Combined, Planned Parenthood and Affiliated Medical Service have four clinics in the state that perform abortions.

Abortions were legalized by the Supreme Court in 1973, and since then conservatives have tried to reverse that decision. A woman has the right to privacy, and that includes having an abortion. The decision to have an abortion is a decision between a woman and her doctor only. Government involvement should not happen, and unfortunately Governor Scott Walker chose to not respect women when he signed this bill. Condemn Governor Walker for restricting a woman’s right to have an abortion by signing the petition below.

Dear Governor Walker,

The federal government allows a woman to have an abortion. It has been legal for forty years, and yet state governments have tried to restrict the right to abortions. Now a new wave of states with Republican governors are passing restrictive abortion laws.

Recently, you signed a bill that would require women to have an ultrasound before having an abortion. The doctors are also required to explain what is being seen through the ultrasound to the patient. That is emotionally difficult for a woman to see before she gets an abortion. It is already very emotional to decide to have an abortion, and you have just made it much harder.

Along with the emotional harm you have caused, now the number of abortion clinics in the state of Wisconsin will be cut in half. You have groups suing you because of this law because you should have never signed it in the first place. Government should never step in when it comes to a woman’s health decisions.
