Don’t Demolish Historical Theatre

Palace Theatre

Target: Matthew Guy, Minister of Planning, Victoria, Australia

Goal: Stop the demolition of The Palace Theatre

The Palace Theatre in Melbourne, Australia is a partially heritage listed theatre with a long history that is being utilized as a theatre, cinema and a live performance venue. There are plans in the works to demolish this well-known site for luxury hotel suites and apartments. The Palace Theatre significantly contributes to Melbourne’s thriving music scene and its demolition would leave thousands of concertgoers without a venue. Moreover, demolishing The Palace Theatre could mean that Melbourne gets bypassed on tour routes altogether.

The Palace Theatre has been in operation since 1860. It was originally known as the Douglas Theatre, but got renamed after re-opening when it got destroyed by a fire. It is currently partially listed as a heritage site in Melbourne. For over the past hundred years it has been a Melbourne city staple, having been utilized for theatre, movies and most notably as a live performance venue for musical acts. Currently there are plans to demolish the theatre in order to construct a complex of luxury hotel suites and apartments.

The Palace is a significant venue for artists touring Melbourne and contributes greatly to Melbourne’s thriving music scene. It also gives local musicians a chance at exposure when opening for touring acts coming through Melbourne. The Palace is the perfect size for hosting mid-sized artist touring Melbourne, being bigger than the local Billboards venue and meeting onsite needs for those not requiring the 5445 person capacity of Festival Hall; The Palace houses 1850 people.

The demolition of The Palace Theatre would be devastating to all those involved in the Melbourne live music scene. Please sign the petition below to urge the Minister of Planning in the state of Victoria, Matthew Guy, to stop the development of the hotel apartments and not demolish The Palace Theatre. Save and protect a theatre that holds so much historical and cultural significance.

Dear Matthew Guy,

The Palace Theatre in Melbourne is an important historic site that serves as a stopping point for many live music acts touring in Melbourne. It hosts many international touring acts and the budding local acts that support them depend on the preservation of this venue. Moreover, The Palace is also partially heritage listed and has a long history. For over the past hundred years is has been a Melbourne city staple, having been utilized as a theatre, cinema and live performance venue.

I urge you to stop the demolition of The Palace for the construction of luxury hotel suites that is currently in the plans. Please support the arts and those who enjoy going to all the events hosted at The Palace Theatre. The demolition of the venue will be devastating to local artists and will negatively affect the thriving live music scene in Melbourne.
