Target: Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal
Goal: Return child to his teenage mother
A woman had her son taken away after her ex-boyfriend’s mother convinced the Louisiana courts that she was too young to be a good mother. She now barely gets to speak to her child while the father, her ex who repeatedly abused her, sees the child every day. Demand custody is granted back to the mother.
Samantha Vaughan was 15 years old when she began her relationship with her now ex-boyfriend who would consistently abuse her. After finally working up the courage to leave him, she found out she was pregnant; after giving birth to her son she took excellent care of him even while attending school. But when he was five months old, her ex’s mother convinced the courts she was unfit simply because of her age and won custody.
The only thing Samantha was guilty of was being a teen mother who did not have the money to fight back against a manipulative woman with greater resources. Now her son is exposed to his physically abusive father daily while only getting to talk to his mother a few times a year. Considering Samantha never neglected, abused, or left her son wanting for anything, this is an injustice of the greatest kind.
By signing the petition below, you will help encourage Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal to reverse the court’s decision and grant custody back to Samantha. Being a teenager should not be enough grounds to take someone’s child away from them.
Dear Governor Jindal,
Samantha Vaughan had her son removed from her after her ex-boyfriend’s mother convinced the courts that she was an unfit mother solely based on her age. Now she barely has the opportunity to speak to her child throughout the year while the father, her ex who was repeatedly physically abusive, sees the child every day. Custody must be granted back to Samantha, as age alone is not a sufficient reason to declare someone an incompetent parent.
Samantha was only guilty of being a teen mother who did not have the resources to fight back against a woman with more money. As of now her child is exposed to his physically abusive father on a daily basis while she must struggle to gain contact just a few times a year. The fact that Samantha provided more than adequately for her child even while going to school and never abused or neglected him makes this a great injustice.
Please take action to grant custody back to Samantha and reverse the court’s decision. Being a teenager should be irrelevant to the issue of custody when the parent provides well for the child.
