Target: Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin
Goal: Ensure Schools in Oklahoma have tornado shelters
Many schools in Oklahoma still do not have adequate tornado shelters to protect their students. After the horrible destruction Oklahoma faced from Tornados in May, the idea that students are still vulnerable to these natural disasters is shocking. Demand all schools in Oklahoma provide tornado shelters that can effectively protect students.
Earlier in 2013, in the span of 11 days two EF5 tornados hit the state of Oklahoma. EF5 is the strongest rating available, with winds that can reach up to 200 miles per hour or greater. Amidst the casualties that resulted, seven children died due to the fact their elementary school did not have a tornado shelter.
The destruction that resulted from only these two made national headlines; as part of “tornado alley” it is guaranteed that more tornados of this variety will strike again. Yet no action has been taken to ensure that schools across the state have tornado shelters. This creates a ticking time bomb scenario where the lives of children specifically are at risk.
All schools should implement tornado shelters that are able to not only fit all students and faculty, but are in an area constructed to withstand winds up to at least 200 miles per hour. While these would be preferably underground, above ground shelters could also be created. There is no excuse to leave students so vulnerable in a high-risk area.
By signing the petition below, you will help encourage Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin to make tornado shelters mandatory for all schools in Oklahoma. It is the least that can be done after the tragic loss of life that has already occurred.
Dear Governor Fallin,
A large number of schools in Oklahoma have yet to implement adequate tornado shelters. After the destruction Oklahoma faced this past year, the idea that students remain needlessly vulnerable to tornadoes is shocking. All Oklahoma schools must have tornado shelters that can protect students.
Amidst the casualties from earlier this year, seven children died because their elementary school did not provide a tornado shelter. As part of “tornado alley,” Oklahoma is guaranteed more tornadoes of this variety. All schools should be required to implement tornado shelters that are able to fit all students and faculty, and be constructed to withstand winds up to at least 200 miles per hour.
Please take action to make tornado shelters mandatory in Oklahoma schools. After such a tragedy there is no excuse to leave students so vulnerable in a high-risk area.
