Target: “Ender’s Game” Author Orson Scott Card
Goal: Pledge to boycott film adaptation of Card’s novel due to his extreme anti-gay opinions
An upcoming science fiction film called “Ender’s Game” is an adaptation of the eponymous novel by author Orson Scott Card. This film adaptation has drawn controversy over Card’s long-standing and outspoken opposition to same-sex marriage, gay adoption, or even the right of gays to be openly gay. In 2009, Card became a board member of the vociferously anti-gay National Organization for Marriage, which has spent millions of dollars fighting same-sex marriage, gay adoption, and even schools that protect the physical safety of gay students.
Card has also penned many diatribes promoting the sanctity of the apocryphal concept of “traditional marriage,” a fact that is especially ironic given his membership in the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Church, which historically allowed polygamy and banned interracial marriage. Said Card: “Laws against homosexual behavior should remain on the books…to be used when necessary to send a clear message that those who flagrantly violate society’s regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society.”
While it is an inevitability that any film created will involve at least one person with whom we have political disagreement, this is an extreme case. Orson Scott Card has gone to radical, and frankly, bizarre lengths in his opposition to same-sex marriage or any legal rights for homosexuals. In a 2008 piece that betrayed not only a hatred of gays, but a strong un-American tone, Card wrote: “Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage.”
Needless to say, an author who pledges to overthrow the government to stop same-sex marriage is clearly not the type of person we should be giving money to. Please sign the petition below to let Card know that you will be boycotting “Ender’s Game” to decry his outrageous statements.
Dear Orson Scott Card:
I am writing to inform you that I will not be seeing the upcoming film adaptation of your book, “Ender’s Game.” Your past comments about gay rights, gay equality, and gay people as people have been caustic, offensive, and crude. As someone who believes in the humanity and equality of gay men and women, I deplore your remarks and your ongoing membership with and leadership in radically anti-gay organizations and hate groups like the National Organization for Marriage.
You have the right to your beliefs and your free speech, and I have the right to vote with my wallet and refuse to support you by seeing your film. In light of their viciousness and cruelty, I demand that you withdraw your past comments about the gay community and apologize for them.
