Target: U.S. President Barack Obama
Goal: Stop providing arms to Syrian opposition forces.
The White House recently announced that the United States will begin directly supplying arms to anti-government rebels in Syria. In addition, thousands of U.S. troops are “training opposition forces and coordinating operations” against Syria’s Assad regime in locations such as Turkey and Jordan. The Pentagon has also developed plans for a “no-fly zone” over Syria, according to the progressive group ANSWER Coalition.
The Obama administration would have us believe that their intervention in Syria’s civil war is entirely due to human rights issues. Ironically, two of the U.S.’ main supporters in their campaign against the Assad government are Saudi Arabia and Qatar, countries known for their repressive absolute monarchies. The United States is using Syria’s civil war as an excuse to punish the Assad government for trading with other countries deemed hostile to the West. Arming opposition forces will not make Syria a better trading partner, nor will it improve the economic conditions back in America. Money that could be spent on improving American infrastructure, creating American jobs, and improving American healthcare options will instead be spent on escalating yet another international conflict. Tell President Obama to cease directly arming and covertly training opposition forces in Syria.
Dear President Barack Obama,
We’ve seen the results of U.S. intervention in the Middle East: the quagmire created in Afghanistan, and the fundamentalist terror unleashed in Northern Africa via the destabilization of Libya. Now, your administration has announced its intent to begin directly supplying arms to opposition forces in Syria, and the Pentagon is already drafting plans for a no-fly zone over Syria.
Mr. President, enough is enough. The American people are tired of our tax dollars going toward the waging of endless war on sovereign nations. We are tired of watching you support human rights violations in absolute monarchies while condemning alleged human right violations in countries unfriendly to U.S. trade. Furthermore, the last time Western troops sought to arm opposition forces within a sovereign nation, weapons ended up in the hands of fundamentalist religious militants who unleashed their reign of terror on previously stable secular states. Refrain from military intervention in Syria, and focus American military and American money on American problems instead.
