Goal: Demand justice for spa worker who was unfairly terminated
A spa worker, Jennifer Finley, was fired recently for declining to be given a “Brazilian” wax by her co-workers as part of her training. The training would have involved having her genital region completely exposed to them, as well as the normal pain and discomfort that go along with this type of waxing, which is the removal of nearly all of the hair on the labia and anus area.
While having this procedure is a choice that some women make, it most definitely belongs in the realm of choice. It is one thing to require that every spa worker be trained in all of the procedures offered by the spa, including being trained to perform a Brazillian wax on a customer who requests it. It is quite another to be forced to undergo it or be terminated.
Also, it was only the women who were required to practice this procedure on each other. The men were not required to perform genital hair waxing on each other, even though that is a service offered by spas as well. Finally, it was also scheduled for the first day of her period, when the pain level and embarrassment would be even higher. This is a case of both discriminating against a woman for making a choice about how her body is treated, and also discriminating based on gender.
Ms. Finley has filed suit in Pennsylvania against the owners of the spa. Please sign this petition today to tell the owners to claim responsibility for the unjust firing and compensate Ms. Finley accordingly.
Dear Owners at European Wax Center Franchise Group, Inc. and Western Penn Waxing LLC,
The spa worker Jennifer Finley has filed a lawsuit against your companies for gender discrimination and retaliation when Ms. Finley declined to have a Brazillian wax performed on her by her co-workers. This petition is to ask you to claim responsibility for the alleged actions of your manager at the European Wax Center where Jennifer was working and compensate her for wrongful termination.
While having this procedure is a choice that some women make, which is why it is offered by spas, it most definitely belongs in the realm of choice. It is one thing to require that every spa worker be trained in all of the procedures offered by the spa, including being trained to perform a Brazillian wax on a customer who requests it. It is quite another to be forced to undergo it or be terminated.
Furthermore, the alleged actions of your manager who did not take seriously Ms. Finley’s request to decline the waxing, were insensitive and do not reflect an attitude of courtesy and graciousness that one would expect from a professional salon. The standard training would have required her to be exposed to her co-workers, as well as cause extra pain and embarrassment during her period. She could have been offered to have the training at another time, or in private. There are many other ways the situation could have been handled, other than the alleged crass comments and termination.
For the sake of the rights of Ms. Finley, future employees and the reputation of your salon, please claim responsibility for the unfair treatment of Ms. Finley and compensate her accordingly, setting an example for others in your industry.
