Target: New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly
Goal: Spread awareness about the two men who harassed and assaulted LGBT young people on the New York City subway and demand justice for the victims
Several LGBT youths were taking the F train back to Queens on Sunday after a pride parade in New York City when they were violently harassed and subsequently assaulted by two men on the train. The two men also assaulted a young woman recording the incident on her phone.
In the video captured by the young woman, one of the men begins by using pointed and insulting language to refer to people in the gay community, and subsequently threatens to rape the young LGBT people on the train. The video cuts out when he physically attacks the woman recording him to try and steal her cell phone. He grabbed her arm, chased her to the back of the train and groped her. She was forced to run to try to find the emergency stop button.
The video begins again with a verbal confrontation by a group of passengers on the train. They had gathered in defiance of the terrible words and abusive actions of these men. When the argument gets heated, one of the men reaches out and puts his hand around a young woman’s neck.
This incident follows a string of violence against gay people in New York City. These types of continued displays of public violence against the LGBT community must end. They are not in sync with the values of a city like New York, nor with the values of a free country. No one should have to suffer this kind of public harassment and abuse just for living their lives.
Please sign this petition to urge the New York City Police Department to distribute the photos of these hostile men, and to demand justice for their victims.
Dear Police Commissioner Kelly,
On Sunday, June 30, 2013 after the Gay Pride March in Manhattan, a group of LGBT youths were assaulted on the Queens-bound F train. The two male perpetrators publicly harassed the youths with hate speech, threatened to rape them, and then physically assaulted a woman recording the incident. They then proceeded to assault an additional woman by putting a hand around her neck.
This behavior is unacceptable, and it comes after a long string of incidents involving violence against gays in New York City. You must send a clear message to the citizens of New York that this kind of harassment and abuse will not be tolerated.
Please circulate the photos of these men, and work actively to hold them accountable for these crimes.
