Target: The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo
Goal: Conduct full investigations of and prosecute all perpetrators involved in raping girls as young as 18 months
Recently, nine young girls between eighteen months and twelve years old sought medical treatment at Panzi Hospital in Kavumu–Lwiro axis, in South Kivu Province, east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for sexual abuse injuries. These young girls had very serious internal wounds and marks of violence on their bodies, resulting in the death of two children. The survivors suffer grave health complications, and are permanently scarred for life. These victims will unfortunately experience untold psychological problems. Such violence and abuse must be ended.
Sexually abusing young girls is said to be related to harmful traditional practices in the area. This sadistic torture of young girls is perpetrated by individuals who kidnap young children from their communities. Stricter laws that will lead to prosecutions of all perpetrators can lower and potentially end such an inhumane tradition. By destroying a child’s full realization of her rights, these perpetrators are violating international and national laws. These abuses have serious implications on the child’s protection, survival and development.
The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General in DRC, Mr. Roger Meece and the Country Representative of UNICEF, Ms. Barbara Bentein, are deeply concerned about the recent incidents of rape of young girls. As they are aware that the Congolese authorities are taking steps to arrest these perpetrators–these must be accompanied by tangible measures to conduct full investigations and prosecution of all guilty individuals involved in this despicable practice. Sign the petition to demand the Government of the DRC help end sexual abuse of young girls.
Dear the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo,
Recently, nine young girls between eighteen months and twelve years old sought medical treatment at Panzi Hospital in South Kivu for sexual abuse injuries. These young girls suffered very serious internal wounds and had marks of violence on their bodies. Two of them died, and the survivors are left with grave health complications and untold psychological problems. Such violence and abuse must be ended.
You have arrested two suspects implicated in the cases. As we are aware that you are taking some steps to address the horrific crime, we implore you to take further concrete measures and conduct full investigations and prosecution of all perpetrators involved in this despicable practice. Stop the harmful tradition of sexually abusing young girls. Punish those who are guilty and provide support to the victims.
