Goal: Condemn Texas Governor Rick Perry for making personal attacks on Texas Senator
Target: Texas Governor Rick Perry
The game of politics can be quite mean and it’s not unusual for politicians to disagree with each other in a very public manner. However, Texas Governor Rick Perry took it too far when he aired some public and very personal attacks on Senator Wendy Davis.
There has been much attention drawn to Wendy Davis recently, as she almost single-handedly stopped an anti-abortion bill from being passed at a special Senate session called by Governor Perry by holding a 12-hour long filibuster. The filibuster was ended on an unfair call by the GOP senators, but a yelling crowd was enough to delay the vote until 12:03am, when it was no longer considered valid.
Governor Perry and Senator Davis’ views on this issue are completely opposed. However, Governor Perry made political disagreements very personal at the National Right to Life Convention when he said “Even the woman who filibustered the Senate the other day was born into difficult circumstances. She was the daughter of a single woman, she was a teenage mother herself. She managed to eventually graduate from Harvard Law School and serve in the Texas senate. It is just unfortunate that she hasn’t learned from her own example that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential and that every life matters.”
This very personal attack on Senator Davis, who was indeed raised by a single mother and became a single mother at 19, was entirely rude and uncalled for. If ultrasounds have nothing to do with abortion, which is the reason that Republicans ended the filibuster, then Davis’ personal life most certainly has nothing to do with her reaction to this bill.
Governor Perry over-stepped his bounds with this comment and needs to apologize to Senator Davis immediately.
Dear Governor Perry,
You recently made some very inappropriate remarks regarding Senator Wendy Davis’ personal life at the Right to Life Convention. While it is acceptable for you to disagree with her on the political issue of abortion, personally attacking her because of these disagreements is unacceptable. These comments just go to show how little regard you truly have for a woman’s life and rights.
It is too late to take these words back and I can only hope that America sees these ignorant comments as just another reason to support Senator Davis. However, the one thing you can do at this point to show your respect is apologize to Senator Davis in a very public manner. Just because you are in a high office does not mean that you may use your words to harm others.
