Condemn Ohio For Taking Away Women’s Rights

ohio abortion new law

Target: Ohio Governor John Kasich

Goal: Condemn the governor of Ohio for attempting to block women from having abortions and restrict access to affordable healthcare.

Ohio’s current budget plan has been pushed through all the legislative branches to be signed into law by the governor. Despite efforts to urge him to veto the bill when it arrived at his desk, Governor Kasich signed it into law the evening of June 30th, 2013. In the controversial Ohio House Bill 59, some of the most restrictive laws regarding abortion in the nation have been put into place, including requiring that women seeking abortions undergo a trans-abdominal ultrasound. This, along with the lines of legislation that will limit the rights of women, is now the law of the state, and the governor must know that this will not be taken lightly.

The  $62 billion budget plan for Ohio that was just signed into law by Governor John Kasich includes, among other things, an increase in the sales tax rate by 0.25% and almost $3 billion in tax cuts. Along with the financial aspects of the budget bill, known as House Bill 59, parts that were signed into law will severely affect the rights of women in many ways. Access to low-cost family planning services have been completely cut, Planned Parenthood has lost a good chunk of it’s government funding, rape clinics can face being closed down if they offer advice to victims regarding abortions after forced pregnancies, ultrasounds must be performed on women before an abortion can take place, and the amount of time a woman must wait before having an abortion after discovering that they are pregnant has been increased. These measures serve only to limit the rights of women regarding their sexual health and family planning, and it is clear that Ohio is clearing a path for other states to jump on board with these measures.

The fact that Governor John Kasich was willing to sign these measures into law is despicable, and he must know that the American people do not support him in this. Sign this petition to condemn the governor for signing these budget bill provisions into law and taking away women’s rights.

Dear Governor Kasich,

On the evening of June 30th, 2013, you signed into law provisions in the state budget bill that completely limit the rights of women to affordable family planning, healthcare, and abortions. As you know, some specific parts of the bill include the defunding of Planned Parenthood and other low-cost family planning services in state, the chance of rape clinics being closed down should they offer advice on abortion to victims that are forced in pregnancies, the requirement of women looking to undergo an abortion to first get an ultrasound, and an increase in the amount of time a woman must wait after learning she is pregnant to get an abortion. These new laws are cruel and unjust, and they will directly affect women across your state in ways that you could not imagine.

I am signing this petition today to express my disgust in your lack of care for the women who live in the state you govern, as well as to show you that the majority of Americans will not sit quietly and watch you take away people’s rights. Limiting people in the way that you just did goes against the founding principles of this nation, and it will not be taken lightly.
