Target: U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy
Goal: Show support for Supreme Court Justice Kennedy’s decision to deny a motion that would ultimately halt marriage equality in California
When proponents of the recently overturned Proposition 8 appealed to Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy to deny the issuance of same-sex marriage licenses in California, he politely turned it away. Without any additional comments, Kennedy dropped the issue altogether. Applaud his refusal to be manipulated by the losing side in this legal disagreement.
As Supreme Court rules state, those defeated in a legal dispute have 25 days to request a rehearing for the case, and so it is likely that Proposition 8 supporters will attempt to sway another Supreme Court Justice. It is, however, unlikely that their pleas would be approved by the high court, as such requests rarely are. Proposition 8 supporters and sponsors allegedly reacted in terror to the numerous weddings that were held at San Francisco City Hall immediately following the court ruling.
Kennedy’s denial of their motion is an encouragement to other policymakers who are too often bullied into partisan politics at the expense of the people. It will become more important for future politicians and elected officials to base their decisions off of individual cases, instead of adhering to narrow political agendas.
Other events have shown that supporters of Proposition 8 have little standing to defend it, as California’s governor and attorney general both refused to defend them. Still, there will always be defeated authoritarians who will make desperate last attempts to deny others the same rights they enjoy. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy defended the rights of American people and stood up for equality. For this, he should be commended.
Dear Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy,
I would like to thank you and applaud your decision to deny partisan attempts to halt marriage equality. Recently, you refused to give in to proponents of Proposition 8 who continued in their desperate attempts to deny marriage rights to thousands of Americans. While authoritarians will continue to thwart the progress this country has made in granting equal rights to all, elected officials like you give this nation hope and encouragement. All policymakers must weigh cases on an individual basis and refuse to act in favor of biased political agendas.
Your support of marriage equality is commendable. I appreciate your decision to endorse the legal rulings of the court, and I applaud the strength of character that enabled you to oppose prejudiced partisan efforts.
