Stop Bill From Cutting Renewable Energy Funds

Target: House of Representatives

Goal: Stop the House of Representatives from passing a bill that will defund renewable energy efforts

As Congress decides on new budgets for 2014, the fate of renewable energy programs remains in limbo. House Republicans seek to cut spending on renewable energy in order to provide more money for military spending.

After sequestration created a budget of $967 billion for governmental spending, Congress has worked to piece together a new budget plan that will provide for all expenditures. The House Republicans hope to bolster military spending, but under the new plan this is impossible without cutting funding from somewhere else — in this latest case cuts are slated for renewable energy programs.

Although last year the Appropriations Committee called for $700 million more to go towards renewable energy, this year House Republicans and the Appropriations Committee presented a bill that cut investments to renewable energy by $911 million from the 2013 level. Renewable investments would therefore take a cut of more than $1 billion from what the Appropriations Committee indicated was necessary just last year.

Without funding towards renewable initiatives, environmental issues and degradation will continue to be highly problematic. The U.S. military has indicated that climate change can be considered a major threat to national security and has made many efforts to support renewable energy programs. However, Republicans hope to disinvest in renewable initiatives in order to fund the U.S. military, creating a misalignment of interests. President Obama and the White House are not in accordance with the House Republicans’ plans for disinvestment and indicated plans to veto the bill if passed.

By signing the petition below you will be asking members of Congress to vote against this bill that will cut renewable energy spending in favor military spending.

Dear House of Representatives,

The United States military has declared climate change a threat to national security, and this is a threat that must be taken very seriously. We cannot ignore the environmental degradation and desperation that is occurring not only in the United States but also around the world, especially when environmental issues are drastically affecting the well-being of human beings. Investing in renewable energy initiatives is imperative to confirming a safe and healthy future for the people of our country.

I am writing you to ask you to block the new bill from the Appropriations Committee calling for divestment in renewable energy programs so as to instead bolster military spending. Renewable power is inestimable to our country’s future and success, and must be financed. Cuts to renewable investments will only damage the health and well-being of our country. Please do not allow this divestment in renewable energy to take place.
