Commend Electric Company on Plans for Renewable Energy Sources

HECO Power Plant

Target: Constance H. Lau, CEO of Hawaiian Electric Industries

Goal: Commend The Hawaiian Electric Company on implementing plans to use renewable sources of energy

The Hawaiian Electric Companies (HECO) has recently filed its new Integrated Resource Planning Report and Five-Year Action Plans. These new reports outlined the company’s future plans to meet electricity needs while making the shift towards renewable energy sources.

A main component of the company’s plan is the deactivation of its Honolulu Power Plant and half of its Maui Kahului Power Plant. Deactivating, and not retiring, these plants will allow them to be functional in the event of a natural disaster. However, discontinuing their regular use will allow HECO to use less fossil fuel oil, and instead use “cleaner, cheaper fuels,” according to a HECO press release.

Another benefit of deactivating the power plants is that renewable energy sources are less expensive, a savings that will trickle down to the customers. The company has also committed to finding new jobs for all of its employees that will be affected by the closures. Other benefits outlined by the plans include developing low-cost, fast track utility-scale renewable energy projects, like those that utilize wind and solar energy; replacing generating units to those that use cleaner fuels, like biomass/biofuel or liquefied natural gas; maximizing the potential of utility grids, like rooftop photovoltaic systems, so that they can use customer-sited renewable generation; and installing smart meters for all customers so that they can better regulate their own electricity usage while utilizing greater amounts of renewable energy.

By planning to use more renewable energy sources, HECO is demonstrating its commitment to preserving the environment, as well as its drive to provide affordable electricity to all customers. By singing the petition below, you will commend HECO on its efforts to use cheaper and cleaner fuel sources.

Dear Ms. Lau,

HECO’s recent announcement that it will deactivate several of its power plants in order to begin the shift towards using cleaner and cheaper renewable energy sources is highly commendable. HECO is a leading company in Hawaii. By emphasizing renewable energy, HECO sets an example for other companies to follow.

In addition to showing a commitment to the environment, HECO’s plans to use renewable sources shows its commitment to its customers’ satisfaction. The new sources are less expensive to operate, a savings which will positively impact customers. Furthermore, the planned implementation of smart meters will allow customers to better manage their own electricity usage and bills. We would like to commend you and the company on its decision to implement greater use of cleaner and cheaper energy.
