Urge Egyptian Government To Investigate Lynching

Target: President Mohamed Morsi

Goal: To open a fair investigation into the lynching of four Shia Muslims.

The lynching of four Shia citizens in Egypt by a mob led by Salafi sheikhs religious leaders has gone without punishment. The lynching comes after months of anti-Shia hate speech among the ruling Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. This incident proves that the government must do what it can to protect the Shia population of Egypt in order to ensure their equal rights. The government must immediately open an investigation into the incident and bring those responsible to justice.

The group of Shia who were targeted had gathered for a religious feast at the home of their relatives. The mob had gathered to hear speeches by Salafi sheikhs and their words incensed the crowd to the point of targeting the Shia population. The Salafi sheikhs consider Shia Muslims heretics. The government needs to step forward to ensure the religious freedom of all their religious minorities.

The official response to the killings so far has fallen short of the goal of protecting the Egyptian citizenry. The president’s office has condemned the killing but has not ordered an investigation based on the religious beliefs of the Shia victims. Sign this petition and demand immediate justice for the victims of religious beliefs.

Dear President Mohamed Morsi,

Your government needs to do more to ensure the religious freedom of Shia Muslims. You also must ensure that they are not subject to violence. By doing so, your government can show the international community that religious tolerance and protection of human rights is essential in your county.

I urge you to open an investigation into the religious motives behind the attack. Also, you must do what you can do to condemn the religious officials behind the hate speech that led to this violence. By regulating their hate speech, your government will be able to better control attacks against the Shia minority.
