Target: Senator Wendy Davis, Texas Senator who filibustered anti-abortion bill
Goal: Commend Senator Davis for filibustering against an anti-choice bill in Texas
On June 25. 2013, the Senator from Texas Wendy Davis worked tirelessly to filibuster a dangerous and extreme anti-abortion bill that would have prohibited abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, restricted access to emergency abortions, and closed nearly all of Texas’ abortion clinics. Davis had planned to speak for thirteen hours to prevent the bill from being voted on before midnight, but Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst shut her down around eleven hours. Allegedly, her speaking about mandatory ultrasounds was “off topic,” and used as grounds to end the filibuster.
In a moving display of solidarity with Davis and the women’s rights movement, protesters interrupted the subsequent proceedings and delayed the roll call until after the midnight deadline. They called it a “people’s filibuster.” The malignant bill was dead.
Wendy Davis deserves our commendation for her brilliant efforts that culminated in a true act of democracy in action. She is a bastion of women’s rights and an inspiration to passionate, committed activists everywhere.
Please sign this petition to thank Wendy Davis for her service to the health, safety, and freedom of women.
Dear Senator Wendy Davis,
I am writing this letter to thank you for your efforts to filibuster Senate Bill 5 on June 25, 2013, intended to make it nearly impossible for women in Texas to obtain a safe, medical abortion. In times such as these, when women are losing more and more of the rights gained in the past through slippery legislation such as this Senate bill, we need lawmakers like you to stand up and fight for the health, safety, and freedom of women.
Thank you, also, for being a role model for young girls who want to be leaders, in their communities or elsewhere. They need to see strong and powerful women taking a stand against injustice, and they can look to you for that inspiration. You’ve performed a wonderful service for our country, and I thank you sincerely for it.
