Target: Tony Abbott, Opposition Leader
Goal: Demand that Tony Abbott remove Liberal candidate Mal Brough and apologize for his sexist comments
The menu at a small fundraiser hosted in March in Brisbane, Australia, for Liberal candidate and former minister Mal Brough, served an item called, “Julia Gillard Kentucky Fried Quail – Small Breasts, Huge Thighs, and A Big Red Box”. Julia Gillard, Australia’s Prime Minister, demanded that Mal Brough be disendorsed by the Liberal party, but the opposition leader, Tony Abbott, has said that he will stand by his candidate. The menu item is a sexist, childish, hurtful insult towards Australia’s Prime Minister. Please demand that Abbott apologize and that Brough be disendorsed for his actions.
Brough, who is already caught up in a sexual harassment case, apologized for the menu, stating that it was not offered to the public, but that’s not the issue. The issue is that Julia Gillard is not being attacked due to her performance, but due to her gender. Despite this, Brough is facing no consequences from his party.
This is not the first time Prime Minister Julia Gillard has been face with sexist remarks and digs from Abbott’s party. Abbott has been reported as saying that women aren’t biologically suited to politics, and once said that the unmarried Prime Minister “should make an honest women of herself”. Gillard once lambasted Abbott for his misogyny and sexism for fifteen minutes during a speech in Parliament.
Recently, Julia Gillard resigned from her post as Australia’s first Prime Minister and Labor Party Leader. Please sign this petition if you believe that Mal Brough has proven himself unfit for endorsement and that Toney Abbott should apologize for his sexist attitude towards former Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
Dear Opposition Leader Tony Abbott,
There may come a day when you are indoctrinated as the Prime Minister of Australia. If your attitude towards former Prime Minister Julia Gillard is anything to go by, the female population of Australia should live in abject fear of that possibility. Your comments towards Julia Gillard aside, you have said that women’s “withholding of sex” is just as bad as men’s “demanding it”. No, it is not just as bad, because when two people who love each other have sex, it is not the man who has to worry about becoming pregnant. Your ideas about women and your attitude is both reprehensible and outdated. Please think about the sort of people you want your party to endorse, and about the sort of person you want the public to see you as. Do you really want to be known as a misogynist?
