Target: Jade Beall, photographer
Goal: Thank and support photographer Jade Beall for showing realistic examples of postpartum female bodies.
Jade Beall is a photographer who published a semi-nude photo of herself and her friend showing off their postpartum bodies. Her photos caught the attention of thousands of mothers across the nation, and now Jade has expanded the project to include over 50 women so far. Their purpose is to advocate for a healthy body image for all women after giving birth. Jade has started a movement of acceptance, celebration and building confidence for many women nationally and across the world.
Jade first posted a photo of herself and a friend on her Facebook account. The photos gathered thousands of “likes” on her page and hundreds of mothers expressed a wish to be photographed by Jade as well. This sparked a project that Jade is now developing into a photo book called “A Beautiful Body.” Her intention is to reach wider audiences and show people what mothers really look like after giving birth, contrary to popular pressures on women to get back into shape immediately after giving birth.
Jade’s project encourages women across the U.S. to feel beautiful and confident again. From her own experience she had long struggled with insecurities and body image issues, and the self-loathing only got worse once she gave birth to her first child. This is a common problem among many women, especially because the utopian demands of the media and society require women to bounce back to their pre-baby shape. This is often impossible because women’s bodies change naturally with pregnancy and childbirth. Coming to terms with this reality is especially hard when there are pre-existing body image issues.
Jade Beall is planning to expand her photo project to include themes like aging, cancer and eating disorders. Please sign the petition below to support Jade in her project and future endeavors and thank her for such a beautiful project that reminds women everywhere that childbirth is not the end of their beauty and worth as a woman.
Dear Jade Beall,
Your project photographing semi-nude women showing off their postpartum bodies is a blessing to women everywhere. Your beautiful photographs not only encourage the participating women to look at themselves anew and acknowledge their still present beauty after childbirth, it also shows others the truth about the female body. Your photographs are excellent examples that remind us all about the reality of the human body and its ever-changing appearance.
I want to thank you greatly for starting this project and expanding it into a photo book. Your contribution to fighting utopian ideals for women will not go unnoticed. Keep up the good work and good luck with touching upon other socially crucial problems with your photographs.
