Commend Military for Recruiting LGBT Members

Target: California National Guard

Goal: Applaud U.S. Military for sending recruiters to LGBT event

The U.S. Military has decided to set up recruitment stations at an LGBT event, actively recruiting members of the LGBT community. This is a major step forward for an institution that previously did not allow individuals from the LGBT community to serve.

The California National Guard plans to set up two tables at the upcoming San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Parade. The parade is an annual event that celebrates California’s LGBT community and is expected to have more than one million attendees. Members of the California National Guard will be present at the event to recruit new members, and they will be joined by openly gay soldiers who will be available to answer questions and aid in recruitment. The California National Guard has previously recruited at other Pride events in the state.

This change in recruitment strategy reflects many changes that are taking place since the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” legislation was repealed. With this legislation gone, individuals who identify as homosexual are allowed to serve in the U.S. Military and have been celebrated in many venues for their service, as well as given higher ranks in the service. The way that the California National Guard is reaching out to members of the LGBT community is particularly meaningful because the institution is attempting to make connections with the community and allow individuals to exercise their agency in choosing whether or not to serve their country — something that was previously denied to individuals in the LGBT community.

By signing the petition below you will be praising the U.S. Military and the California National Guard for their inclusive efforts after the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

Dear California National Guard,

Outreach to members of the LGBT community is extremely important, especially since this community has been historically exploited and ignored due to provisions in the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell legislation. The recruitment efforts of the California National Guard at the San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco Pride celebrations are an exciting step forward in a more inclusive military.

I am writing you to praise you for your dedication to recruiting members of the LGBT community and openly inviting these individuals to play a role in serving the country. These actions of the U.S. military and specifically of the California National Guard are momentous and should be applauded. Thank you for actively opening your recruitment sessions to LGBT individuals.
