Target: Chipotle HQ
Goal: Thank Chipotle for being the first restaurant of its kind to label GMO products.
Chipotle is the now the first restaurant to begin labeling genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in its food. Despite all the recent controversy surrounding states unsuccessfully passing GMO labeling bills, Chipotle has taken it upon itself to inform its customers which products contain GMOs, preservatives, and hydrogenated oils. While you won’t see the labels in the store itself, the website lists each item on the menu and what it contains. This also includes positive attributes like local and organic. Chipotle is leading the way into a future of food transparency, as well as advocating local, organic, and wholesome farming practices as a mainstream option.
This is a breath of fresh air in a food industry dominated by Monsanto and Kroger, who fought tooth and nail to squash California’s GMO labeling bill last fall. It has become obvious that said corporations have too much political clout and too many high priced lawyers to allow the state to mandate GMO labeling in grocery stores. Unlabeled GMO products allow these corporations to make more money by selling less than savory food that is cheap to produce without disclosing what dangerous products they might contain.
Let us thank Chipotle for giving us food transparency in such a veiled industry. Not even Whole Foods has begun to label GMOs, although the company has promised to do so in the future. As the question of whether or not GMO products are safe continues to be asked, more restaurants will need to start labeling either by popular demand or government legislation. Chipotle is worthy of our thanks for being the first. Sign this petition if you want other restaurants and grocers to follow in Chipotle’s footsteps.
Thank you for labeling which of your items contain GMOs, preservatives, and hydrogenated oils. It’s refreshing to see a company stand up for its costumers even at the risk of losing profits, which I doubt you will. I believe you are leading the way into the future. Your website is very transparent, evidently not too many of your products even contain GMOs. I expect that the added transparency will push you to use less and less GMOs, preservatives, or hydrogenated oils as your customers become more aware.
I encourage you to also begin labeling in the stores, because not everyone knows that you do so online. By labeling your products you not only identify yourself as a caring company, you make a statement that we should not be using so many GMOs, preservatives, or hydrogenated oils, because it is unhealthy to do so. Thank you for leading the way into a more clear food future for this country and for the world.
