Save Polar Bears From Extinction

Target: Obama Administration

Goal: Save polar bears from suffering habitat loss and eventual extinction

In 2008, when polar bears were listed as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act, a special rule was passed that kept the listing from necessitating any reductions in green house gas emissions. The Bush Administration enacted this law, and the Obama Administration supports it. The Obama Administration has further prevented polar bears from being provided with additional measures to deal with the global warming causing their endangerment. A status review listing polar bears as “endangered” must be undertaken, and a plan laid out to limit greenhouse gas as necessary to recover sea ice.

Despite the polar bear’s listing as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act, the number of polar bears alive is expected to plummet by 2050, leaving only 1/3 of the world’s current population. Global warming poses as the largest threat to polar bears and has not been seriously addressed by the Obama Administration. Polar bears are facing an exhausting battle for survival and if nothing is done their only existence will be in museums.

The sea ice that polar bears use as their habitat and hunt seals on has been melting much quicker than it used to. The loss of this ice can cause malnourishment and starvation and in some cases may even result in drowning due to longer distances of swimming. The cause of the climate change affecting sea ice is global warming which is cause by greenhouse gas emissions. When bears are no longer able to get food on ice it will pose a safety threat of possible human-bear interactions if in search of food on land.

The special rule that the Bush Administration imposed needs to be nullified and the polar bear needs to be listed as “endangered.” By signing this petition you are calling on the Obama Administration to take immediate steps toward protecting polar bears from extinction.

Dear Obama Administration,

The polar bear species is in danger of extinction due to the lack of greenhouse gas limitations being enforced. The unusual rule that was enacted by the Bush Administration in 2008 limiting the polar bear listing from causing reductions of greenhouses gases needs to be nullified immediately. The Obama Administration needs to take further steps to develop a recovery plan and set greenhouse gas limits.

The sea ice the bears use to raise their cubs on and hunt on is melting rapidly. In 2012 sea ice covering the Arctic Ocean fell to a record low minimum extent. It ranged 300,000 square miles which is a size just about the size of Texas. It’s expected that if left untreated, global warming could leave the Arctic ice-free by summer of 2020. The temperature over the Arctic has risen 3,6 degrees since the 1960 which is a contributing factor to melting snow as well.

Global warming has continued to amplify because it has not been treated as a serious matter by the Obama Administration. Polar bears are at risk of extinction and have a long fight ahead of them to survive, but if the Obama Administration does not take any action to combat greenhouse gas pollution the species will not last.

I am urging you to save an entire species from going extinct by the end of this century. Without efforts to limit greenhouse gases the habitats of polar bears will be melted into water and they will have no hunting grounds and no where to raise their cubs.
