Support Wife of Nobel Prize Winner’s Stand Against Chinese Authorities

Liu Xia, wife of Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo

Target: Liu Xia, Wife of Nobel Prize Winner Liu Xiaobo

Goal: Support the release of Liu Xia, Liu Xiaobo, and Liu Hui

The Chinese government has been harassing Liu Xiaobo – writer, professor, literary critic, and notable human rights activist – and his family in response to calls for political reform. For the past 11 years, Nobel Prize winner Liu Xiaobo has been incarcerated for protests against the repressive Chinese government. His wife Liu Xia has been placed under house arrest, and her brother Liu Hui was recently sentenced to an 11-year prison sentence for fraud over a real estate dispute. Supporters of the family say that this is continuing punishment of Xiaobo’s family, and an act of intimidation to discourage other activists.

In 2009, Liu Xiaobo was jailed on charges of subversion and his appeal was dismissed in 2010. In the same year, he was awarded the Nobel peace prize, infuriating Chinese authorities. They denounced the award and incarcerated his wife in her own home. Liu Xia has tried to speak out against the suffering of her family, despite fears of retaliation.

According to her lawyers, she is suing Beijing police for her illegal house arrest and preparing a petition for her husband’s release from unjust incarceration. Let’s stand behind her in this important fight for freedom and justice. Tell her she can add your name to her petition to retry her husband Liu Xiaobo.

Dear Liu Xia,

I am deeply saddened to hear about the continued persecution of you and your family. Your husband has been a powerful and inspiring force in his protestations against repression. The whole world knows of him, his struggles, his persecution, but most importantly, his message. It is empowering to hear about your own struggles and your continued efforts to free your family.

The recent injustices faced by your family- your brother’s imprisonment and your house arrest, are only further evidence of the Communist regime’s violence. Their retaliation comes out of their fear of freedom and free expression.

I stand with you in your fight for the freedom of you and the Chinese people. Please add these names to your petitions to have your husband’s case retried and for your own release from unjust house arrest. I hope that you, your husband, and your brother, will be freed as soon as possible. Even more, I hope that the change sought by Liu Xiaobo comes soon, and you live to see a freer China.
