Target: Lisa Kavanaugh, Founder of Blue Lion Rescue
Goal: Praise organization for rescuing animals from Colorado’s Black Forest Fire.
Founded by Lisa Kavanaugh, Blue Lion Rescue is one of the largest no-kill shelters in the country. The animal sanctuary in Yoder, Colorado specializes in giant dog breeds such as Mastiffs, Great Danes, Saint Bernards, and Great Pyrenees. With help from donations and volunteer staff, the licensed non-profit organization provides shelter and care for about one hundred and twenty five large dogs.
Some of the rescued dogs are not adoptable because past abuse and neglect has led them to develop unfavorable dispositions, but they are able to peacefully live out the rest of their lives on the sanctuary’s property. Kavanaugh works to find homes for as many well-tempered, suitable pets as she can.
Kavanaugh drove through backroads under a black smoky sky to rescue twelve Great Pyrenees from a Black Forest adoption facility evacuating from the path of the Colorado wildfire. The obstacle of getting around deputies did not stand in her way of saving these animals from the fire and assisting fellow dog rescuers who needed a temporary safe place for their animals during the mandatory evacuation.
The Black Forest Fire has been reported as the most destructive fire in Colorado history, burning 16,000 acres over nine days, prompting thousands of people to flee from the area. Many animals were scattered into various locations. Fortunately, several organizations partnered with the Humane Society helped to rescue hundreds of pets and livestock displaced by the evacuation. After the fire was contained, the Great Pyrenees were able to leave Blue Lion Rescue and return to their shelter facility in the Black Forest. They are all in good health and two have been adopted since then.
Please sign this petition to praise Lisa Kavanaugh and her team of volunteers at Blue Lion Rescue for going out of their way to provide safety to animals in need.
Dear Lisa Kavanaugh, Founder of Blue Lion Rescue
I would like to commend you and your organization for heroically transporting several Great Pyrenees threatened by the Black Forest Fire and keeping them safe on your property during the mandatory evacuation of another facility. It was extremely brave and selfless for you to drive to the Black Forest to help a fellow animal shelter while the wildfire was encroaching. Domestic animals are particularly vulnerable to displacement, injury, or death during natural disasters because they are likely to scatter or be left behind. Bold rescue efforts such as yours are much needed to save animal lives.
Your humane work is inspiring and sets an example of effective coordination and cooperation between organizations during emergencies. The communities you work in are provided with compassionate, hard-working role models as you do everything possible to improve the lives of man’s best friend. Thanks to you, the Great Pyrenees from Black Forest remained in good health and are on their way to being adopted by loving homes. We appreciate all that you and your volunteers do at Blue Lion Rescue.
