Target: California Public Employees’ Retirement System
Goal: Applaud CalPERS for ensuring equal access to healthcare for transgender members.
Many transgender people struggle to find equal access to healthcare in the United States. It is an issue that most people do not even think about. The California Public Employees’ Retirement System, also known as CalPERS, recently voted to allow transgender people equal access to its healthcare. CalPERS is the largest public pension fund in the country, with 1.3 million members.
Previously, members could be denied access to healthcare by CalPERS depending on their gender identity. Masen Davis, the executive director of the Transgender Law Center applauded CalPERS for voting to stop excluding transgender people from healthcare. In a statement he said, “We’re incredibly proud of the CalPERS Board for taking action to make sure transgender people are treated fairly and have the same access to care as everyone else.”
Many LGBT advocacy groups are fighting for equal access to healthcare for people no matter their gender identity, especially in the state of California. The number of companies that cover gender reassignment surgeries has been increasing, but still many companies refuse to cover what is medically necessary for transgender people.
Healthcare is a heated issue in America, especially after the Affordable Care Act was passed. Most people focus on the politics of healthcare and overlook the clear truth, which is that transgender people are discriminated against many times when searching for healthcare. Applaud CalPERS for providing equal access to healthcare for transgender members by signing the petition below.
Transgender people face discrimination in many aspects of life, especially when it comes to healthcare. They are repeatedly denied access by many companies, but the number of companies offering equal access has been on the rise. As the largest pension fund company in the nation, you have voted to provide equal access to healthcare for transgender members.
On Wednesday, you made a decision that will positively affect the lives of your transgender members. The vote made on Wednesday needs to be recognized, and hopefully it will inspire other companies that provide healthcare to also extend coverage to transgender members in order to ensure full equality.
Many LGBT groups advocate for equal access to healthcare for transgender employees, and they will recognize this step toward full equality. Most people do not think about or realize the daily struggles that transgender people have to go through, whether it is using a public restroom or dealing with employment discrimination. Putting an end to healthcare discrimination is a step in the right direction. Thank you for moving towards full equality for people no matter their gender identity.
