Target: Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, Leader of Republican People’s Party of Istanbul, Turkey
Goal: Praise Middle East protesters for their efforts to bring awareness to important environmental issues
Environmental protests in the Middle East are finally making a major impact upon the environment in the region. Middle Eastern people have become increasingly concerned about energy security, water security, and food security, and they’ve been voicing their concerns more than ever before. Praise the efforts of the Arab Spring organizations for empowering the people of the Middle East to stand up for their land.
Socioeconomic processes, rapid population growth, and a dire need for modernization has made Middle Easterners less tolerant about their current lifestyles and speak out in opposition against leaders who hinder progress. The Gezi Park protest leaders in Turkey are an excellent example of this phenomenon. Natural resources have been stretched to the limit and countries like Turkey have found the strength to stand up to the government and fight for the protection of their land. Not only are Middle Easterners standing up for their environment, they are also standing up for their health, their freedom from discrimination, and their right to a fair lifestyle. Local and national environmental protests have also ensued in Morocco, Mauritania, Iran, and Somalia.
Although not all of these environmental protests have been successful, they are making a powerful statement over and over again. A sustainable civil society is on the rise in the Middle East, and the current protests are setting a chain reaction of movements into motion. Sign the below petition to urge environmental groups to continue to speak out for what is right for our planet.[gravityform id=1 name=Signthe Petition: ajax=false]
Dear Mr. Kılıçdaroğlu,
Thank you for keeping the ideals of the Arab Spring alive as you stand up for the people and the environment of Turkey. Environmental protest is alive and well in the Middle East. Not only does this suggest that Middle Easterners are more concerned with environmental sustainability, but also that a fair and balanced civil society is on the rise.
I am urging you to work with other environmental activists and civil rights leaders to bring a better life to the people of the Middle East. To have a fulfilled and meaningful life, citizens must have a safe and healthy environment to live in. Although the Gezi Park protests are a huge step in the right direction, there is much more work to do in the Middle East.
