Target: Boston High Schools
Goal: Applaud Boston’s decision to distribute condoms to high school students
Boston High Schools will begin distributing free condoms and safe sex pamphlets to students. This program will promote safer sex and sexual health for these high school students.
Recently the public schools of Boston voted to allow schools to provide free condoms and information about safe sex to the students of the three dozen high schools in Boston. In years prior, only health centers or schools with health centers had the ability to distribute condoms, but now students will have access to condoms as well as information about sex in all schools. The decision to disseminate condoms is part of a larger wellness plan that Boston public schools are attempting to initiate – a plan that would standardize sexual education throughout all schools in the district (including middle schools) and put an emphasis on safe practices for sexually active individuals.
With teen pregnancy as a main reason that students are dropping out of school, this new wellness program aims to provide students with the tools to make healthy, smart decisions that will keep them able to continue their education. All students who choose to receive contraceptives will go through a program that addresses safe sex practices. The schools indicate that promoting safe sex at a young age is important so as to instill healthy lifestyle choices in the students, so that they continue to practice safe sex as adults.
By signing the petition below you will be praising public high schools in Boston for taking a stand in favor of safe sex and health for teens. The decision of these Boston schools is likely to affect many other schools in the United States, and will ideally lead to a system in which students have access to both information and contraceptives for safe sex.
Dear Boston Public School District,
Spreading information about safe sex practices is incredibly important for all potentially sexually active individuals, and especially for youth. Instilling ideas about the importance of safe sex at a young age is crucial for the continuation of safe sex practices in later years. The decision of the Boston public schools to provide contraceptives for students at all high schools, along with pertinent information about safe sex, is an extremely important step towards healthy lifestyle practices for high school students.
I am writing you to commend you for your decision to provide condoms at all public high schools in Boston, as well as to provide information about the importance of safe sex practices. Students who have this available to them will be able to make healthier decisions, and will learn not be ashamed of their healthy, safe, sexual activities. I am hopeful that the decision of the Boston public schools to start this type of program will encourage other schools across the United States to begin similar programs to promote safe sex and healthy decision-making.
