Aid Indian Flood Victims

Target: President of India Pranab Mukherjee

Goal: Support measures to aid the victims of floods in Northern India.

Following a recent rash of floods in the Himalayan regions of Northern India, including the states of Uttarkand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, the Indian government has enacted quick and effective measures to save as many lives as possible. The government has dispatched aid workers, soldiers and helicopters to look for survivors, as well as pledging a 10 billion rupee aid package for the affected states, including the parts of neighboring Nepal and Tibet hit by the flood. The Indian government deserves to be commended for its rapid and compassionate response to this grave natural disaster.

An exact death toll is not yet known, but it is estimated that over 1000 people have died due to the floods, while at least 50,000 more are currently trapped in their villages. In particular, the holy town of Kadernath was badly hit by the flood, and many mourn the loss of a great number of cultural artifacts lost there. The worst part of the flood began when a large lake above Kadernath bursts it’s banks, causing water to sweep into the town.

By all reports, the soldiers dispatched to Kadernath have been handling emergency procedures extremely well. The helicopters have evacuated hundreds, while a rope bridge built by soldiers was used to evacuate over a thousand civilians from Kadernath. Looting, a constant danger in cases of natural disasters, has been kept to an absolute minimum.

The rest of the world must stand by India as they struggle to cope with this terrible natural disaster. Fortunately, the Indian government has been handling the rescue work extremely well, sparing no expense to get to those in need. In particular, their commitment to assisting victims outside of India’s borders deserves international commendation.

Dear President Pranab Mukherjee,

The recent floods in Northern India have saddened the entire world, with reports of thousands trapped and awaiting aid. It is good to hear, however, how well the government of India has been handling this disaster; the outstanding actions of soldiers in building the rope bridge that saved over a thousand civilians as well as the astounding 10 billion rupee aid package your government has pledged to the areas in need are particularly deserving of commendation. As well, the rescue workers commitment to helping those in need, even outside of India’s borders, is astounding.

The actions of your administration serve the rest of the world as an example of how to properly, compassionately and immediately provide aid to those in need of it in a disaster situation, regardless of wealth or social class. We stand beside India in these trying times, and give our sincerest hope and support to all those affected.
