Target: Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper
Goal: Applaud Hickenlooper for promoting clean energy
The state legislature of Colorado recently passed a bill that strengthens the state’s standard for the utilization of renewable energy sources. Much to the gratitude of the Sierra Club and environmentalists throughout the state, Governor John Hickenlooper signed the bill into law, setting a veritable national standard for renewable energy. The measure doubles the percentage-based requirement of solar and wind energy that rural electricity cooperatives must provide by the year 2020.
Not only will this bill increase the state’s commitment to and expectations of renewable energy sources, it will also boost the local economies and jobs in the rural areas primarily affected. In a statement supporting the bill, Hickenlooper noted that “[e]ach waste-to-energy facility creates an estimated $54 million in economic activity and most of the proposed facilities have been targeted toward rural communities…[a]lso as a newly eligible resource, waste-to-energy projects create profitable outlets for the more than 70 million waste tires stockpiled in the rural areas around Colorado.” While Republicans in opposition have complained about energy bills skyrocketing, the bill caps any increase in rates at two percent.
The Governor’s signing of this bill is a momentous occasion that puts the nation’s focus on clean, renewable energy. The success of this bill over time will emphasize to other states the need to limit greenhouse gases and protect the environment while still promoting economic stability and job growth. Please sign the petition below to thank Governor Hickenlooper for taking a stand on the future of the country and setting an excellent example for other states.
Dear Governor John Hickenlooper:
I am overjoyed at your recent signature of the state bill that strengthens Colorado’s standard for renewable energy. This is an important law that will greatly increase your state’s commitment to renewable and clean energy sources while protecting vulnerable rural families from exorbitant energy rates. As someone who cares deeply both about the protection of the environment and the economic viability of vulnerable families and individuals, I thank you for striking a superb balance between the two.
The long-term success of this program will set an excellent example for the rest of the country; the message will be sent that protecting the environment and limiting pollution are not mutually exclusive with job growth and economic dynamism. Thank you for making Colorado the national leader in the field of clean, renewable energy. I applaud your efforts for the future of the country, and wish you the best of luck.
