Release Nobel Peace Prize Winner and His Wife

Target: Chinese Leader Xi Jinping

Goal: Release human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo and his wife

Liu Xiaobo is currently being held as a political prisoner in Jinzhou, Liaoning. He’s the world’s only Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a human rights activist who called for political reforms and for the end of Communist China’s single-party rule. In essence, he had done nothing worthy of his 11-year incarceration sentence. His wife is being held under house arrest without charge or due process. This is a blatant violation of their rights. Please voice your outrage at this injustice by signing this petition, and by doing so join the many voices who have already called for their release.

Liu Xiaobo was detained on December 3rd, 2008 for his part in the creation of the Charter 08 manifesto. The manifesto is a call for the Chinese government to respect basic human rights and to change its current system of government. Over 10,000 people have signed the charter since its release.

Liu is the third person to receive the Nobel Peace prize while incarcerated, and the first Chinese citizen to receive a Nobel Prize while residing in China. He received it in 2010 during his fourth term of incarceration, though he was denied a representative to collect for him. His wife, Liu Xia, was placed under house arrest without charge or due process after he received the Nobel Peace Prize for “his long and nonviolent struggle for fundamental rights in China.” Two years later, and the two of them are still being detained.

The United Nations has stated that China is violating international law by detaining the two, and yet there is still no sign of Liu Xiaobo being released before his 11-year sentence has ended. Please sign if you agree that Liu Xiaobo and his wife should be freed from incarceration.

Dear Xi Jinping,

Fundamental human rights are to be respected in all countries, regardless of their government or their leaders. All Liu Xiaobo wanted was to improve his home, and yet you’ve locked him up on the suspicion of “inciting subversion of state power.” Liu Xiaobo helped create the Charter 08 manifesto because he wants to improve his home. He loves China just as you do. If he didn’t, he’d have left for another country rather than stay and risk the imprisonment of him and his wife.

Please release him. As a writer, a professor, a human rights activist, and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, he can do your country so much good, but only if he is outside of prison walls.

Thank you for your time and understanding.
