Target: Renan Calheiros, President of the Brazilian Senate
Goal: Do not allow psychologists to treat homosexuality as a disorder
Recently, a Brazilian human rights commission approved legislation that would allow psychologists to treat homosexuality as a disorder. This violates the 1999 ban on treating homosexuality by the Federal Psychology Council. The organization is fronted by an evangelical pastor, Marco Feliciano of the Social Christian Party.
Marco Feliciano has enraged human rights groups with incredible homophobia, stating that AIDS/HIV is a “gay cancer,” and one of Feliciano’s supporters states, “In practice, (the initiative’s) result would be that a person over 18 years of age, responsible for his actions, who is homosexual and wants to reorient his sexuality, can be attended by a psychologist.” This marks the LGBTQ community as ill, something that the Federal Psychology Council attempted to bar.
Another council member stated, “Today psychology, as well as other scientific disciplines, recognize that sexual orientation is not a pathology that should be treated, it is not a perversion nor a disorder nor a behavioral disturbance. Since this is the case, we cannot offer a cure, and that is an ethical principle.”
This legislation cannot pass. The LGBTQ community has made strides worldwide to be recognized as equal, and this legislation would hinder progress that has already been made in Brazil. Although councilmen in Brazil do not fear that the legislation will pass through the Senate, we must show our contempt for this type of behavior. Sign this petition to urge the president of the Senate to stop this legislation before it can be used to propagate further discrimination.
Dear Renan Calheiros,
Recently, Marco Feliciano of the Social Christian Party approved legislation that would allow psychologists to treat homosexuality as if it were a pathology or disease. This violates the Federal Psychology Council’s 1999 ban that prevented psychologists from treating homosexuality.
Marco Feliciano is an outright homophobe and should not be allowed to enact such legislation. He has shown the public that he is a bigot, calling AIDS/HIV a “gay cancer,” and this policy is an extension of his bigoted beliefs. This policy is a regressive step away from the equality that the LGBTQ has worked so hard to achieve in your nation.
I urge you, do not allow this legislation to pass when it reaches the Senate. Through your help, the integrity of psychologists and the equality of the LGBTQ community can be preserved. Please, stop this legislation from passing through the Senate.
