Target: The U.S. House of Representatives
Goal: Stop the U.S. House of Representatives from passing a bill that would wipe out animal protection laws
The Senate recently passed a bill that will contradict and wipe out animal protection laws nationwide. The bill, currently sitting in the House Rules Committee, includes an amendment that will abolish laws banning gestation crates, battery cages, factory confinement laws and horse slaughter bans among many others. If the bill passes, it will be a huge step back for safe and humane procedures in the food industry.
The bill in question is called the Farm Bill, which includes an amendment created by Iowa representative Steve King that would block states’ efforts to reduce the suffering of animals killed for food. If the bill is passed, the amendment proposed by representative King would force states to allow cruelly produced meat, eggs, and dairy products to cross their borders from other states even if they have been banned. This amendment would interfere with such laws as California’s ban on foie gras, Arizona’s law banning gestation cages, Michigan’s law banning veal crates, California’s law banning battery cages, and put at risk regulations for state factory farm confinements, horse slaughter bans and puppy mills.
It is important to note that the Farm Bill is just another attack coming from the cruel food industry producing meat, eggs, and dairy. It is an attempt to make sure that the industry keeps making profit from cruel practices committed against innocent animals. Representative Steve King, who created the amendment interfering with existing animal protection laws, comes from the nation’s largest egg-producing state.
Existing state laws protecting animals are scarce already. If this bill passes it will be a major setback for ensuring a safer and more humane food industry. Please sign the petition below and urge the House of Representatives not to pass the Farm Bill that would legally protect cruel and gruesome practices against animals.
Dear U.S. House of Representatives,
The Senate recently passed the Farm Bill and now it is up to you whether to sign it into law. This bill contains a controversial and unnecessary amendment created by Iowa Representative Steve King that would abolish many animal protection state laws nationwide. If the bill passes it wipe out such laws as California’s ban on foie gras, Arizona’s law banning gestation cages, Michigan’s law banning veal crates, California’s law banning battery cages, and put at risk regulations for state factory farm confinements, horse slaughter bans and puppy mills.
I urge you not to pass the Farm Bill and support states’ efforts to ensure a more humane production of meat, eggs and dairy. Please do not force states to allow distribution of animal products that are the result of gruesome practices.
