Target: G8 Summit Leaders
Goal: Stop poverty and climate damage caused by predatory capitalism
The G8 Summit is a meeting of eight of the world’s largest economic states. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions gathered for a protest against the current system of predatory capitalism, embodied in large part by the G8.
In a system which is highly individualized and competitive, many are left without food, shelter, or access to a job where they could work for those necessities. There are currently very few support systems in place in the Capitalist system. This ‘sink or float’ mentality is incredibly unhealthy and the result is large numbers of people living in poverty while a select minority live in excessive wealth.
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions set up a protest near where several of the most powerful world leaders would meet for the G8 Summit. The ICTU said that due to Western Capitalism and the policies of G8 leaders, one billion people were living in extreme poverty.
ICTU Chairperson Pamela Dooley explained that “[The Capitalist system] is a system which puts profit before people and always will. It is a system for the few and not for the many.” Ms. Dooley also cited that unemployment in Ireland has risen to “unprecedented levels.” Another goal of the protestors was to bring the importance of clean energy and dealing with climate change to the attention of the G8.
This protest is another step in the important discussion with world leaders about the vitality of promoting human rights and sustainable energy. Show your support with the Belfast protestors.
Dear G8 Leaders,
The recent protest in Belfast, Ireland aimed to bring several crucial issues to your attention. The number of people living in immense poverty at the result of the policies of G8 leaders. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions places the number of people living in extreme poverty at one billion.
The current Western Capitalist system leaves many abject conditions with very few supports in place to help them get out of the situation. While many suffer and struggle to get by, an elite minority live in excessive wealth and hold nearly all of the power and economic decisions.
A second aim of the protestors is to bring to your attention the importance of clean energy. Many of the current Capitalist policies encourage companies to prioritize profit over anything else, including whether their products are energy efficient or made through abuses to workers’ rights. Climate change is a critical issue and cannot wait to be addressed. Many of the countries that you represent continue to use large amounts of damaging, unclean, non-renewable fossil fuels as a primary source of energy.
I urge you to consider what these protestors are saying and to revise the harsher capitalistic policies that are in place and which are causing so many human rights abuses, particularly in regard to poverty and energy efficiency .
