Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Commend the President for greatly increasing the visibility and inclusion of Gay and Lesbian individuals in American government
When President Obama took office, there was only one openly gay federal justice in the entire nation. Now, there are seven. The six justices he has appointed include three women, one of whom is the first openly lesbian Latina federal justice. These appointments are demonstrative of the President’s commitment to LGBT inclusion and equality. President Obama deserves commendation for nominating these talented individuals in the face of Senatorial obstruction.
The inclusion of minorities in respected positions such as LGBT individuals – who have yet to gain full legal and social acceptance and equality – is vital to their integration and acceptance into the nation. The presence of seven gay and lesbian justices on the federal bench is a sign of the increasing acceptance of LGBT individuals in America.
This inclusion also increases the legitimacy of LGBT individuals in this country at a time when that system has yet to recognize them as fully equal, and demonstrates to young LGBT Americans struggling with rejection and prejudice that they too can achieve great things. Please add your name to this petition and commend President Obama for his efforts to make this nation’s legal system one that represents and protects all citizens.
Dear President Obama,
Thank you for your appointment of a record number of gay and lesbian federal justices. You have demonstrated a clear commitment to LGBT rights. All six of the openly gay justices you appointed are extraordinary members of the legal community, and as federal judges, they are an inspiration. I applaud your appointment of these exceptional individuals, and your dedication to equality before the law for all Americans.
I’m sure that you understand the value of these appointments. It is so important that young LGBT Americans can see people like them in positions of authority and public trust. Your appointment of these six individuals says to the young LGBT person feeling alone and worthless that they are not alone, that they have potential to do great things, and that they are a part of this county.” The presence of these six exceptional people on the federal bench helps to say to LGBT Americans that the courts are their courts too.
Once again, let me thank you for appointing these six justices, and for your commitment to LGBT rights. I hope that you will continue to appoint exceptional judges representing the full diversity of this nation for the remainder of your term in office.
