Target: Jayden Sink, creator of Pink Lemonade for Peace
Goal: Commend young girl for setting up lemonade stand and donating proceeds to peace and equality organization
The Westboro Baptist Church is well known for spreading messages of hate and when five-year-old Jayden Sink of Kansas City found this out, she decided to take a stand. Recently Jayden set up outside the Equality House with a good old-fashioned lemonade stand and a sign stating “Pink Lemonade for Peace. $1 suggested donation”. Her goal was to stand up against the hateful messages from the Westboro Baptist Church by raising money for Planting Peace, the organization that currently owns the Equality House.
The Equality House, located directly across the street from the Westboro Bapist Church in Topeka, Kansas, is painted the colors of the pride flag and is just one of the many ways that Planting Peace, a non-profit started in 2004, tries to spread goodwill and equality throughout the world. Contrary to the goals of the Equality House and Planting Peace, the Westboro Baptist Church is best known for protesting at military funerals and sending messages of hate into the LGBTQ community.
On Friday alone, Jayden raised over $400 at her lemonade stand as the community came out in support. Unfortunately, members of the Westboro Baptist Church also came out, but not in support. Throughout the day, Westboro members allegedly tried to shut down the lemonade stand and, at one point even began yelling out profanities. However, Jayden pressed on and, on top of her lemonade stand, she created a Crowdrise page where she has raised an additional $14,000 so far.
Jayden is able to see what many adults still cannot – love and peace are universal and everyone deserves them. Jayden personally deserves to be commended for her incredible efforts at spreading this message and for her support of Planting Peace.
Thank you for your efforts to spread peace and love this weekend. Your lemonade stand was a great idea. Planting Peace and the Equality House both do great work in spreading messages of peace and love and all of the money you have raised so far will help them do great things.
Please know that no matter what members of the Westboro Baptist Church may say, you did a wonderful thing and it is going to help change the lives of many people. The world needs more people like you.
I hope you continue standing up for peace and love, perhaps with another lemonade stand in the future.
Thank you again for taking a stand against hate.
