Stop Congolese Government from Destroying National Park

Target: The government of The Democratic Republic of Congo

Goal: Don’t allow companies to extract oil from Virunga National Park

Virunga Natonal Park, located in The Democratic Republic of Congo, is home to a fourth of the world’s rare animals, such as mountain gorillas, forest elephants, hippos, and okapi. Yet oil extraction threatens the eco-systems of the park, potentially causing harm to many of the species inhabiting it. The government must stop oil companies from coming into Virunga and destroying the habitats of countless species.

One of the most bio-diverse parks on the continent, Virunga National Park is a World Heritage site. With an incredibly large variety of both animals and flora, the implications of oil extraction are potentially disastrous. Not only is the damage to the eco-system harmful to the park’s large variety of animal species, it also has a negative effect on humans. Lake Edward alone has approximately 500,000 families that count on its resources for survival . The Democratic Republic of Congo has an extremely diverse eco-system, but oil extraction could destroy all of it.

By signing the petition below, you will help encourage the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to forbid oil companies from extracting oil in Virunga National Park.

Dear Joseph Kabila,

Virunga National Park is home to a quarter of the world’s mountain gorillas, forest elephants, hippos, okapi, and other rare species. Yet oil extraction could destroy their eco-system and result in catastrophic consequences. Oil companies must be stopped from extracting oil, so as to preserve the diverse eco-system present.

The reason the United Nations made Virunga National Park a World Heritage site is because it is one of the most biodiverse parks in Africa. With such a large amount of flora supporting a large amount of animals, the threat of oil extraction could end up with horrific results. It is not only the animals and plants that will suffer, however; around 500,000 families depend on Lake Edward alone, thus the result of any sort of accident would mean disaster.

Please take action to stop oil companies from extracting oil in Virunga National Park, to preserve the ecosystem and to protect your people.
