Target: Charlton Bonham, Director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife
Goal: Legalize ferret ownership in California
California is historically a liberal state, where people moved to take advantage of their freedoms. However, it has some unreasonable pet ownership laws. For example, it is illegal to own a ferret in California.
Ferret ownership is governed under the Department of Fish and Wildlife instead of under the Department of Agriculture like other domesticated animals like cats and dogs. The Department of Fish and Game Ferret Fact Sheet states that it is illegal to own ferrets because they are wild animals that may bite or attack, they may have rabies, and they may form feral packs and threaten native wildlife.
This makes little sense, because ferrets bought from pet stores have been raised in captivity, and are no more likely to be feral or have rabies than any other kind of domesticated animal. In fact, they are indoor pets, so that makes them less likely to contract rabies than cats or dogs. Ferret bites are no more dangerous than dog or cat bites. Also, feral cats are known to form packs that hunt, multiply, and kill most of the smaller animals in the vicinity. Yet cats are legal to own in all fifty states.
There is no viable reason why ferret ownership should be illegal in California. Urge Charlton Bonham, Director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to allow California residents to keep ferrets as pets.
Dear Mr. Bonham,
We believe that California residents should be allowed to own ferrets. According to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, ferrets are wild animals that may bite or attack, have rabies, or escape and form wild packs.
All of these points make very little sense when talking about ferrets bred in captivity. Ferrets are indoor pets, so are less likely to contract rabies than dogs or cats. And while they may form packs and cause trouble for local wildlife when feral, stray cats and dogs are famous for forming packs and hunting all the smaller animals in the vicinity.
Please legalize ferret ownership in California as soon as you can, and govern the sale and keeping of ferrets in the same way you would other domesticated animals.
