Stop Building Homes on Toxic Land

Target:  Civil Servants Residential Centre Beijing, China

Goal: Discontinue construction of homes on toxic land

What used to be a railroad factory for 30 years is now a deserted plot of land on which a construction agency is looking to build a community of homes. The first phase of construction in Beijing has shown the land to be extremely toxic and has hospitalized multiple construction workers with serious illnesses. An environmental research group published a report on the seriousness of the toxicity, noting the four main pollutants being heavy metals, electronic waste, petrochemical organic pollutants and persistent organic pollutants.

Thousands of undocumented hazardous plots of land in China (as well as in U.S and Europe) are prime real estate, and companies looking to build homes and communities don’t show concern. In 2008 the State Administration of Work Safety in China agreed that chemical factories and enterprises needed to be completely phased out; this only pushes factories to the outskirts of major cities.

Dizziness, difficulty breathing, blood poisoning and other illnesses are caused by these toxins from simply breathing or touching contaminated soil. Building homes on these plots of land is guaranteed to poison the men, women and children who inhabit them, causing cancer and other fatal illnesses. Demand companies start adhering to environmental guidelines and stop building properties on contaminated land.

Dear Civil Servants Residential Centre,

Building homes for families on top of contaminated land is an indirect practice of criminal and inhumane activity. The pollutants mixed into soil and groundwater are known to cause cancer and other fatal disease in all humans. Toxic gases emitted from an old pipe on your specific plot of land is flammable enough to be lit with a pocket lighter, and is potent enough to cause death from inhalation.

Pesticide factories sprinkle China with toxic fumes and chemicals, sending people to the hospital with dizziness and breathing difficulties on a daily basis. In 2008, the State Administration of Work Safety insisted that highly-polluting chemical enterprises need to be phased out. Poisoning the environment and the women, men and children of Beijing will not be tolerated for any longer. Stop construction on toxic plots.

Why on earth would you build homes for families if the.people who are building the homes are getting sick just being there? Obviously, it is uninhabitable! Scrap the plans to build there and go somewhere else! DUH??
