Thank Television Star for Talking About Depression

Target: Cesar Milan, popular television actor and “Dog Whisperer”

Goal: Commend Cesar Milan for opening up about his suicide attempt to help others understand that depression can be overcome.

Cesar Milan, better known as the “Dog Whisperer,” has rehabilitated many dogs over the years for issues including fear, anxiety, and aggression. He has positively impacted the lives of many people and dogs. Fans, who watch his National Geographic show, “the Dog Whisperer,” perceive  this man as a very calm, in control, and overall happy person. No one would have guessed that Cesar Milan had attempted to kill himself by overdosing.

In early 2010, Cesar Milan lost his constant companion, his pit bull named Daddy. Cesar Milan brought Daddy to help him rehabilitate other dogs as well as prove to the world that pit bulls could be calm, submissive and lovable with the right training. Losing a companion who was always by his side was very difficult for Cesar. In honor of Daddy’s passing, Cesar started the Emergency Animal Rescue Fund to help dogs who are victims of abuse or violence, man-made disasters, such as hoarder and puppy mill rescues, and natural disasters (e.g. hurricanes, fires).

Not soon after Daddy’s passing, Cesar’s wife divorce him. Then, his sons blamed him for the divorce. These events led Cesar Milan to hit rock bottom and ingest “a whole bunch of pills.” Just recently, this dog expert bravely opened up about his depression and subsequent suicide attempt. In an interview, Cesar not only bravely admitted to feeling depressed, but he also shared with others how he learned from such a scary situation, saying “I’m happy I went to rock bottom and now I know the symptoms,” M. “As a father I want to see the signs before my kid or anyone around me in my life has any kind of depression, sadness … My faith got stronger.”

Millan hopes his experience will help his loved ones avoid similar low points. By talking about his feelings openly, Cesar is definitely showing people all over the world that even an expert can feel depressed. Sign the petition to commend Cesar for bravely telling the world about his harrowing experience and helping those who are depressed to understand that depression hits even the best of us and can be overcome.

Dear Cesar Milan,

Over the years, you have rehabilitated many dogs with almost unsolvable problems. Without a doubt, you have helped many dogs and owners during some of their roughest times together, and paved way for a brighter future. First, I want to thank you for your hard work in helping animals and their owners. Secondly, I want to commend you for raising awareness for depression by bravely talking about your own experience.

Depression is a serious condition that plagues millions of people a year. By bravely telling your story, you have shown many people that even a calm and assertive person can feel depressed. But more importantly, you have shown that depression can be overcome. Thank you for sharing your experience, and showing all your fans that even the best of us can hit rock bottom. More importantly, even hitting rock bottom, people who are depressed can overcome it.
