Applaud University for Commitment to Environmental Welfare

Target: Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger

Goal: Support Columbia University’s commitment to the environment and environmental research.

The Princeton Review and the Center for Green Schools recently congratulated Columbia University for their long-standing commitment to environmental welfare, as exemplified by their newly opened “NYC Urban Technology Innovation Center”, a research center for green building technologies specific to New York City. Developing new building technologies is a constant concern for New York City, as it is one of the densest collection of buildings in the world. Now is a chance to show our support for Columbia’s commitment to sustainable living research, and encourage such programs in universities all over the country.

The NYC Urban Technology Innovation Center will also serve as a center for Columbia’s unique urbanization research program, which is one of few like it in the world. Study of urbanization, and the way that increasingly large city centers affect the ecosystems around them, are unfortunately extremely rare. There is hope, however, that Columbia is setting a trend by prioritizing funding urbanization research. Brown and Yale have already begun to follow suit, and a variety of well-respected Indian universities are also expected to collaborate with urbanization researchers from the Ivy League.

In addition to the recently-opened research building, Columbia University has long curated one of the most modern recycling programs of any U.S. university, as well as setting ambitious emission reduction goals on a yearly basis. Initiatives like these have made huge steps in achieving truly sustainable human-environment interactions, and should be applauded and encouraged wherever they are found.

Dear President Lee C. Bollinger,

Congratulations on Columbia’s recent commendation by the Princeton Review and the Center for Green Schools for its commitment to environmental welfare. Research into urbanization and sustainable building technologies is unfortunately rather rare, and it is fantastic to see that a University as well-accredited as Columbia is setting a trend by researching both. Furthermore, the opening of the NYC Urban Technology Innovation Center is a huge step forward for Columbia, New York City, and the world as a whole.

Few avenues of research are so important today as those focusing on human interaction with the Earth. Institutions like Columbia offer the best and brightest minds of our generation the chance to build a more sustainable future. We would like to show our support for Columbia, as well as our hopes that other Universities make a similar commitment to the health of the environment in the future.
