Let Immigrants Who Are Here Legally Obtain Driver’s Licenses

Target: Nebraska Governor David Heineman

Goal: Do not bar legal immigrants from receiving their drivers’ licenses.

Nebraska Governor David Heineman has unilaterally decided that immigrants who fall under the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program should be barred from receiving drivers’ licenses, even though these immigrants have legal work status in the United States. There are currently 285 immigrants who fall under the purview of this decision, who will be prevented from legally driving to work because of it. There is no reason for this policy, other than a desire to make the lives of immigrants harder. When listening to the Governor speak about immigrants (they “shouldn’t be here if they’re not here legally”), it isn’t hard to see that this decision was motivated by pure anti-immigrant prejudice.

DACA is a program that was instituted by the Obama administration in 2012 to give a temporary legalized status to young adults who were childhood arrivals to the United States but who had undocumented status. These young people were being punished for their undocumented status; something they did not choose for themselves. These immigrants have played by the rules their entire lives; they have worked, they have gone to college, but despite all their efforts, they have found themselves locked out of the job market due to their lack of documentation. Sick of waiting for the DREAM Act (the signature piece of legislation that would provide legal status to these young adults once and for all) to wind its way through Congress, the Obama administration made an executive decision to provide a two-year deportation deferral to qualified applicants.

The DACA program has had thousands of applicants already, and for the first time, these young immigrants have been able to experience a feeling of safety and security in their adopted country that they have never had before. As these immigrants have been nothing but excellent contributing members of society, we should be doing everything in our power to make their lives easier; to ease their path to a legal status, instead of hampering their progress with arbitrary rules that are designed to marginalize and oppress them. By signing this petition, you declare that you stand with the 285 immigrants who are, with the assistance of the ACLU, boldly challenging Nebraska’s decision in court. This petition will also place pressure on the Governor to reverse his decision, by showing him that the nation is watching his state, and that he can’t expect to make policies like this without expecting strong blow back.

Dear Governor David Heineman,

Your recent decision to bar DACA beneficiaries from receiving drivers’ licenses must be reversed, as it displays a flagrant bias against immigrants. DACA beneficiaries are in the country legally according to the federal government; they are legally allowed to work in Nebraska. They should be allowed to legally drive to work as well.

DACA beneficiaries came to this country through no fault of their own, and should not be punished for the crimes of their parents. They are hardworking young adults who have lived here for most of their lives, and know no other home. They should be treated as if they were legal immigrants; they certainly deserve

I am urging you to rethink your position and change your policy; allow the Nebraska DMV to begin issuing drivers’ licenses to those who deserve it.
