Target: Police Department of Surprise, Arizona
Goal: Remove DUI arrest and false charges from Jessie Thornton’s record
Recently, Jessie Thornton, an African American resident of Surprise, Arizona, was arrested for driving under the influence. However, he took a breathalyzer test registering his blood alcohol level as zero at the time of the arrest. Thornton believes that he was unfairly treated because of his race. His license was suspended and the arrest is permanently on his record because of the unjust actions of the arresting officers.
Thornton was driving through Surprise at night and crossed the white line of the lane. The officers conducting the sobriety test insisted that he was drunk, despite Thornton’s claims to the truth – that he was completely sober. After he was arrested, he was administered a breathalyzer test. The blood alcohol level registered a 0.000. A drug recognition expert was brought in to analyze Thornton, and wrote a statement saying, ‘in my opinion Jessie was never under the influence of drugs or alcohol.’ Thornton committed no crime, and should not have been arrested under false charges.
Thornton believes he was falsely charged because of his race. He has been pulled over multiple times and given tickets in the past for what he calls ‘driving while black’. He was clearly not under any influence when he was arrested. It is clear that the officers jumped to conclusions and unfairly arrested Thornton because of his race. Due to their judgment, the false charges and arrest are permanently on Thornton’s record. He should not have to face the consequences of a false charge given to him simply because of his race. Demand that the department remove the charges and arrest from his record.
Dear Surprise Police Department:
Recently, Jessie Thornton, an African American resident of Surprise, Arizona was arrested for driving under the influence. When he took a breathalyzer test following the arrest, it registered his blood alcohol level as 0.000. He was clearly not under any influence, which was confirmed by a drug recognition expert. However, Thornton feels that he was arrested simply because of his race.
I ask you to remove the charges and arrest from his record. Thornton was clearly sober when arrested, and he was given extremely unfair treatment because of his race. He should have never been charged and arrested for a crime he did not commit. Thornton must now face consequences of these false charges for the rest of his life. He should not be punished because of his race, yet by these charges existing on his record, that is exactly what is happening. Remove the charges and arrest immediately.
