Applaud Ben & Jerry’s for Avoiding Genetically Modified Ingredients

Target: Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream

Goal: Commend Ben & Jerry’s for bringing awareness to the dangers of genetically modified ingredients in food

Ben & Jerry’s, one of the world’s most popular ice cream makers, is lending its voice to the GMO debate by committing to use only non-GMO ingredients in all of its products by 2014. Not only is Ben & Jerry’s setting a positive example for other food manufacturers, but by taking a stance against the use of genetically modified organisms, they are bringing awareness to the dangers of GMOs.

Genetically modified organisms have come increasingly under fire in both the media and the scientific community recently, as more and more studies illustrate the dangers of ingesting them. The prolonged ingestion of GMOs has been linked to autoimmune disorders, faulty insulin regulation, changes to major organs and infertility, among other harmful effects. The European Union is one of the world’s major powers that have banned the use of GMOs in food, along with Japan and South Korea. Here in the US, GMOs are not only allowed, but companies are not even required to indicate that they are using them. Ben & Jerry’s have spoken out against this in the past and have even gone against their parent company, Unilever, in support of required GMO labeling.

The strong stance taken by a beloved and vastly recognizable company like Ben & Jerry’s not only brings awareness to the very serious issue of GMO labeling and the usage, but hopefully will also persuade other food manufacturers to lend their support to this issue as well. Let’s applaud Ben & Jerry’s for taking a stand.

Dear Ben & Jerry’s,

As the dangers of GMOs are brought more and more to light, it is so important for food manufacturers to react to these findings in a socially responsible way. By pledging to use only non-GMO ingredients in your products, you are not only proving that you truly care about your customers, but are also helping to bring awareness to the GMO debate.

The use of genetically modified ingredients is widely considered by the scientific community to be harmful and the exact extent of the possible damage is still widely unknown. With so many dangerous possible side effects it is important that consumers are fully aware that products contain GMOs before choosing to consume them. By lending your support to required GMO labeling, you are setting a positive example that the rest of the food industry will hopefully follow.

Please continue to support required labeling of GMOs and thank you for committing to eliminate the use of genetically modified ingredients in your products.
