Target: Oprah Winfrey
Goal: Thank Oprah Winfrey for donating millions to help build the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C.
The Smithsonian Museum is planning to build a new facility, called the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), set to open in 2015. Smithsonian founding director Lonnie Bunch says that building the museum by 2015 will cost around $500 million, half of which is funded by the government. Previously, Oprah Winfrey had donated $1 million to the cause. Recently, it has been announced that Oprah Winfrey donated another $12 million, ensuring the museum will be built by its projected time period.
Bunch remarked that Oprah’s $12 million donation will go to the construction “to make sure we build something that will be both memorable to the Smithsonian, but also something that will be worthy of the rich history of African-American culture.” Bunch will name the 350-seat theater in the museum after Oprah Winfrey, and hopes that the theater will be a place for communication by featuring a variety of activities ranging from scholarly programs to musical gatherings and poetry readings.
In a way, Winfrey believes that she is giving back to society by helping build the museum. In her own words, “I am so proud of African-American history and its contributions to our nation as a whole. I am deeply appreciative of those who paved the path for me and all who follow in their footsteps.” Without a doubt, her contribution to building such a monumental and important museum will resonate with the African American society. Sign the petition below to thank Oprah for supporting the museum and for paving way for others to follow in her footsteps.
Dear Oprah Winfrey,
Thank you for donating over $10 million to helping build the Smithsonian’s new facility called the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. Your donation will ensure that the museum will be completed by 2015. This museum will be a “place of meaning, of memory, of reflection, of laughter, and of hope.” Thank you for supporting such a significant project that will advance African American history and culture.
The museum will give a chance for those who care about African American culture to explore and revel in this history as well as to help all Americans see how central African American history is for all of us. Furthermore, the museum serves to remind us of what we were; what challenges we still face; and point us towards what we can become. You said you are “so proud of African-American history and its contributions to our nation as a whole. I am deeply appreciative of those who paved the path for me and all who follow in their footsteps.” We want to commend you for paving the path for others.
