Target: Grace University of Omaha, Nebraska
Goal: Stop Grace University from forcing a student to pay back scholarships
Danielle Powell was expelled from Grace University after three and half years when an administrator discovered she was in a same-sex relationship. As if not being able to graduate wasn’t enough, the school revoked her scholarships and are demanding she pay the tuition she would have owed if she had had the chance to enter her final semester. School officials must waive these charges immediately and issue an apology after this discriminatory harassment.
Danielle Powell worked hard to be the first person in her family to get a college degree, procuring scholarships to cover her full tuition. During her seven semesters at Grace University, she was an active member of the community and even founded a homeless outreach program. Yet as soon as it was discovered that she was in a relationship with another woman, Grace University, citing the fact that “Christian character” was required for them to give her the degree, denied her the opportunity to graduate.
Since then, the school has revoked her scholarships for ‘lack of appropriate moral character’, demanding she pay them back as well as pay the $6,000 in tuition she would have spent had she had the opportunity to go through her last semester of college. Grace University’s actions have been extremely bigoted and are clearly a form of harassment due to her sexual orientation; to right their wrongs it must not only waive the fees it has imposed, but issue an apology to the former student it is tormenting.
By signing the petition below, you will help demand Grace University stop forcing Powell into debt and apologize for all the trouble it has put her through.
Dear Dr. David M. Barnes,
Danielle Powell was not only expelled from your University, but is being asked to pay back all of the scholarships granted to her as well as the tuition she would have owed had she had the opportunity to attend her last semester of college; this is all because she was in a same sex relationship. The demanding of payment is clearly harassment on your part and is the opposite of the Christian thing to do. You must not only waive these fees imposed on her, but issue an apology for all of the troubles you have put her through.
Danielle Powell worked hard to earn the scholarships that covered her tuition for three and a half years; she actively contributed to the University community, including founding a homeless outreach program. Yet as soon as it was discovered she was in a relationship with another woman, every other aspect of her life disappeared and she was immediately dehumanized, expelled, and then hounded for money and put in severe debt. The hatred and intolerance displayed by this University is extremely disappointing; rather than adhere to Christian values of compassion, kindness, or charity, you have proven to be unforgiving, hurtful, and merciless. There is only one way to right the wrongs that have been committed here, and that is through waiving the fees imposed on Powell and issuing a formal apology for the torment you have put her through.
Please take action to remove the fees that have been imposed and give an apology for this entire ordeal.
