Target: Russia President Vladimir Putin
Goal: Do not impose fines on all LGBT pride events
Recently, the lower house of Russia’s parliament passed a bill that will heavily stigmatize the LGBT community in the country. If this bill becomes law, people will face heavy fines for holding any LGBT pride event or giving information about the community to minors. This will be a huge step back for LGBT rights in the country. This discriminatory bill must not be signed into law.
The bill was overwhelmingly passed with a vote of 434-0, reflecting the anti-LGBT sentiments in the country. If signed into law, the bill will impose severe fines on any LGBT person holding a pride event or providing any information about the LGBT community to a minor. This bill is extremely discriminatory towards LGBT people, and a step backwards for LGBT rights in the country. Homosexuality was decriminalized in 1993, but there have been no steps made to decrease the anti-LGBT sentiment since then. The country must make steps to accept LGBT people, and passing this bill has done the opposite.
Many LGBT rights activists have criticized this move. Graeme Reid, LGBT rights program director at Human Rights Watch, released a statement saying ‘Russia is trying very hard to make discrimination look respectable by calling it `tradition,’ but whatever term is used in the bill, it remains discrimination and a violation of the basic human rights of LGBT people.’ This bill must not be signed into law. Russia must do its part to avoid this discrimination. Tell President Vladimir Putin not to sign this bill into law.
Dear President Putin:
Recently, the lower house of Russia’s parliament passed a bill that will impose heavy fines on LGBT people putting on any pride event or providing any information about the LGBT community to minors. This bill is extremely discriminatory to LGBT people. If it becomes law, it will be a tremendous step back for LGBT rights in Russia.
I ask you not to sign this bill into law. LGBT people should not face discrimination for pride in their community. There is no reason that LGBT people should be singled out and made to pay for their lifestyle. It is pure discrimination, and you should not allow this to happen. Do not sign this bill into law.
