Target: College Board
Goal: Modify questions that discriminate against those not in the gender binary
Before AP tests or the SAT, students must fill out a demographic survey that asks various questions about their age, race, grade level, and so on. However, one of the questions asks the student to indicate the highest level of education of their “Father/Male Guardian” and their “Mother/Female Guardian.” This discriminates against students with family members who do not fit into the traditional gender binary, and must be righted.
The fact that the College Board only allows the option of one male parent and one female parent makes it impossible for students with parents who are the same sex or who do not identify with one gender to fill out the questionnaire. By ignoring their very existence the College Board sends out a very clear message of contempt to every member of the LGBTQ community. It is clear students whose parents are outside the traditional parental conception will either have to answer questions dishonestly or with discomfort. More options should also be included under the gender category for the student themselves, so as to avoid the same problems and create a more comfortable and accepting testing experience. If the College Board wishes to collect an accurate picture with their surveys, they need to stop discriminating against an entire demographic and make their questions more inclusive.
By signing the petition below, you will help make the College Board modify the questions that discriminate against those outside of the gender binary and create a more inclusive testing environment.
Dear College Board,
Some of the questions on the demographic survey portion of SAT and AP exams are discriminatory against members of the LGBT community. By only offering two gender options for the sex of the student and of the student’s parents, you are forcing those outside of the gender binary to answer dishonestly and cause them discomfort. These questions must be modified so as to create a more inclusive environment for all students who take your tests.
Students who have parents of the same gender, or parents who are transgender or who do not identify with one gender, do not have an appropriate option to choose. They must lie to complete your survey; the conscious disregard for those outside of the gender binary is an obvious sign of contempt for the LGBTQ community on your part and is sure to make the students with family members who are part of that community extremely uncomfortable. This is not even mentioning the discomfort the student would feel from not having appropriate options for themselves.
Please take action to modify your demographic questions so as not to discriminate against those in the LGBT community. If you are truly concerned with collecting accurate demographic information, these changes are necessary.
