Target: Philip Blake, Senior Bayer Representative USA, Bayer Pharmaceuticals
Goal: Remove harmful additives from Flinstones vitamins
Ask any parent what their #1 concern is and the response will almost always be: “the health and well-being of my child”. In fact, one of the main reasons that parents give their children vitamins is to make sure that their children are getting all of the nutrients that they need in order for them to be as healthy as possible. What they don’t know, is that there are added ingredients in those vitamins that are known hazards to their children’s health.
For decades Flinstones vitamins have been the top-selling children’s vitamin in the country. In the 1980’s most parents made sure that their kids were “Flinstones kids,” in order to be sure that they were getting the proper amount of vitamins and minerals. But hidden underneath the catchy advertising slogans and bright packaging lurks a sinister secret: Flinstones vitamins contain aspartame, cupric oxide, coal tar artificial coloring agents (FD&C Blue #2, Red #40, Yellow #6), zinc oxide, sorbitol ferrous fumarate, hydrogenated oil (soybean), and GMO corn (starch), all of which have been shown to produce adverse health effects.
Some of these ingredients have been shown to be neurotoxic and carcinogenic; others are also used in manufacturing goods such as rayon fabric and dry cell batteries; while still others have been linked to ADHD and gastrointestinal distress. Regardless of what the range of potential negative effects are, one thing is absolutely certain: these additives are not necessary and almost all have a perfectly healthy and safe alternative that could be used in their place.
Call on Bayer Pharmaceuticals to take action to protect our children.
Dear Mr. Blake,
The use of harmful ingredients in vitamins designed for children is both deceptive and unconscionable, especially when safer alternatives are available.
The use of the following ingredients in Flinstones vitamins are dangerous and irresponsible: aspartame, cupric oxide, coal tar artificial coloring agents (FD&C Blue #2, Red #40, Yellow #6), zinc oxide, sorbitol, ferrous fumarate, hydrogenated oil (soybean), and GMO corn (starch). We ask that they be immediately removed and replaced with safer alternative ingredients.
It is your responsibility to promote and protect the well-being of our children. Your ability to live up to this responsibility will be continuously suspect until these harmful substances are removed from these vitamins.
